About the event
Experience this special and provocative concert in the intimate and acoustically vibrant setting of Laudamus Hall.
Performed by Canada’s celebrated duo, soprano Sara Schabas and pianist Isabelle David, the program will center on the Pulitzer-nominated American composer Alex Weiser (b. 1989) and his Yiddish song cycle, in a dark blue night | אין אַ טונקל בלויער נאַכט. Weiser’s cycle sets Yiddish poems by Morris Rosenfeld, Anna Margolin, Naftali Gross, Celia Dropkin, and Reuben Iceland, reflecting on New York City through the eyes of Jewish immigrants building new lives in the city.
The cycle will be preceded by works by Modernist composers who either left Eastern Europe or lost their lives as a result of Nazi persecution, including Erich Korngold, Arnold Schoenberg, Viktor Ullmann, Alma Mahler, and Alexander Zemlinsky.
