The members of the Zyra Trio perform selections of solo repertoire for their instruments and give the world premiere of Toronto-based composer Tristan Zaba's new work, Dream Streams. Written during the COVID19 pandemic, Dream Streams accounts for the inherent delay between virtually interactive ensemble members by integrating this variable into the musical structure of the piece. Both the composition of Dream Streams and this performance were made possible through the support of the SOCAN Foundation. Watch Dream Streams here.
Zyra Trio:
Founded in January 2020, the Zyra Trio consists of violinist Gregory Lewis, cellist David Liam Roberts, and pianist Paul Williamson. The Canadian musicians first met in 2014 in Winnipeg, Canada, and performed together in various capacities for five years before officially establishing themselves as a chamber ensemble. The trio has performed in Manitoba and Ontario, and recently appeared on the Virtuosi Concert Series in Winnipeg alongside guest violist Bethany Hargreaves. Highlights from the Zyra Trio’s 2020-2021 season includes a recital on the Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg Concert Series and a recital in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Tristan Zaba:
Inspired by musical communities across Canada and influenced by interests including literature, improvisation, and film; Toronto-based composer, producer, vocalist, poet, and bandleader Tristan Zaba’s music breaks boundaries of genre and form. From interactive live electronics pieces to rock albums to choral music, Tristan’s work seeks to question itself, its audience members, and its performers through the use of intertextual reference and quotation.
