Mellowtone Duo set for WMC Fundraiser Concert
WMC is kicking off its 132nd season by presenting two of Winnipeg's finest on one stage! We're especially proud to feature such young artists on the cusp of their musical careers. Known as The Mellowtone Duo, Sophie Caron and Will Spencler have a dynamite program lined up, bringing together the expressive sounds of voice, cello, and percussion, creating a captivating musical experience that fuses classical, contemporary, and jazz styles in new and unexpected ways.
As a multi-instrumentalist, Sophie Caron has performed as a cellist, soprano, and double bassist. Well known for her expressive musicality and versatility across classical and contemporary genres, she has been a featured soloist with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in its 2024 Prairie Christmas Concert, and has appeared as a vocalist and cellist with the FILMharmonique Orchestra and the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. She has won trophies and scholarships at the Winnipeg Music Festival and the AMAF Provincial Music and Arts Festival, as well as first place in the Women’s Musical Club Scholarship Competition.
Will Spencler is a classical percussionist and drum set player based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. A sought-after accompanist and clinician, he has performed in a wide range of orchestras, wind bands, chamber ensembles, and theatre productions. Will frequently performs in local concert series such as ReSound and the TD Jazz Festival, among others. He is deeply interested in the crossover between classical and contemporary genres, drawn to chamber music that explores unconventional textures and colours to create distinctive and immersive soundscapes.
The Mellowtone Duo has performed pre-concert events for the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Passionate about collaboration and creative programming, the duo enjoys showcasing classical repertoire through their innovative instrumentation and genre-spanning style.
